Yamaha fans and motorcycle enthusiasts can agree with me when i say that since the death of its four (two) stroke engines, the brand’s lineup (in India) wasn’t as exciting for a very long time. But then the r15 came like a ray of light in the darkness and we saw hope. Through its generation(s) we saw commendable upgrades that only made us grow more fond of the motorcycle. Now the heart of that motorcycle has been put in this. A scooter, called the Aerox 155. A new product and a new story. So enough with the intro because we have quite a lot to talk about this one.

Now Yamaha has done a splendid job in matching the scooters exterior design with what it holds at heart. The scooter looks fast and aggressive with sharp edges everywhere. Also, with its striking paint schemes, there is a lot going on, but none that seems out of place.

With its LED headlights, the step-through format on your foot, and the 14-inch wheels clearly suggests that Speed is its business.

Build Quality

Now all this might pull you in for a closer look and that’s when you will spot a few cost cutting maneuvers on the scooter. For a scooter that is positioned at a premium segment, the Aerox had rather flimsy switchgear. Also, in addition to a few panel gaps here and there, the scooter also gets flimsy plastic in places like the fuel filler cap.

Practicality and Creature Comfort

Now Yamaha has given a few smart places to store your belongings, like the little cubby hole at the front. However, this will not fit the modern bigger phones and is more suited for keys or wallets. The lack of floorboard is due to the position of the fuel tank, which has also resulted in a bigger boot space of 24.5-litres.

The Aerox comes with connectivity feature as well but with limited functionalities. There is no GPS navigation or music controls. What you do get is SMS and call alerts along with a feature to check your last parked location.

The Aerox is a scooter, but as you can see, no floorboard. what you get are two grooves to set your foot in. The space in it is ample, you can move your foot around and it doesn’t feel cramped at all. As for the riding position, the seat is a bit high for a scooter, but the seat is wide and there is plenty of room to move around. You get a fairly upright riding position that won’t break your back.

However, taller riders who anything above 5’10 will have issues accommodating their knee. And considering that the step in the seat comes in quite early, moving further back might not be an option too.

Performance and Ride Quality

The Aerox 155 gets the same engine as the R15 with a few less ponies. But that does not stop it from being the quickest scooter in India. The power delivery is linear and not intimidating. It carries its momentum rapidly and consistently, all the way to triple digit speeds. The 15hp on tap that is laudable by at least scooter standards, the Aerox is zippy and provides smooth overtakes in city traffic, while being capable of cruising on highway at 90-100kmph. We managed to achieve a top-speed of 117kmph which was laudable.

Now, it’s a sport scooter so we must talk handling. The Aerox is an amazing handler at high speeds. Now, unlike other scooters in the market, the Aerox feels a but heavy around corners and demands a little effort to tip it in. This is also due to the stiff-set suspension along with the 14-inch wheel wrapped in fat tyres. The barter, however, is unshakable stability that comes with each corner. The scooter feels planted on a rail while taking corners which inspires more confidence to the rider.

Now sadly, there are no accessories to improve the braking performance on the Aerox. The 230-mm disc brake at the front, while being adequate with its duties even at high speeds lack feel at the lever. Additionally, the rear drum brakes is where we thought Yamaha should improve as the setup felt quite feeble.

Verdict

Now, in the eyes of a performance oriented petrolhead, the Aerox 155 is a damn good scooter.  the Aerox is very much capable to carve a niche for itself at the end of the day it is still a scooter and the word scooter comes with a myriad of expectations in India. In my eyes, the Aerox actually makes for a good second two-wheeler for my garage. Weekend short trips and the occasional fun spirited riding yes. Chores, errands and daily long city rides, not so much.

Whether you are looking to buy a new motorcycle or you are just a bike buff, learning about motorcycle engines and how they work is certainly refreshing. So here we bring you a quick guide into various types of engines mounted over most motorcycles.

Motorcycle engines work in a four-step process known as intake-compression-power and exhaust. The first step is when the engine’s cylinder with a piston intake a mixture of fuel and air, next, it blocks the valves and compresses the fuel and then a spark plug creates an explosion that generates power which is ultimately transferred to the rear wheel, and then leftovers of the explosion are exhausted. Now, let us see how many kinds of engines are commonly used for achieving this task.

Single-cylinder: Cheap to produce and easy to maintain and fix, single-cylinder engines have one cylinder and piston doing all the work, which makes the engine more prone to vibrations.

Parallel-twin: Two cylinders are arranged side by side in this kind of engine and they work together to produce more power but at the same time, they consume more fuel. It is somewhat more balanced as the movement of one cylinder can cancel out the movement of the other, depending upon the firing order.

RELATED NEWS

Inline-triple: This configuration uses three pistons, usually housed in the same cylinder block. Because the pistons are of odd numbers, the vibrations can not be cancelled, unlike an inline-four-cylinder.

Inline-four: Four parallel pistons housed in a single cylinder block, an inline-four engine is considered one of the smoothest engines running on a bike. The reason is its ability to balance pistons’ movement really well, thanks to the even number of engines. Almost all 600-1000cc sports bikes use this configuration.

Flat-twin or boxer: The configuration consists of two pistons horizontally opposed to each other. The advantage of this layout is that it keeps the bike's centre of gravity low and cylinders have a better chance to be air-cooled. This configuration, owing to its complicated structure, is expensive to build, maintain and fix.

Flat-four and flat-six: This configuration is similar to flat-twin except it has extra cylinders. These engines are capable of maintaining a great power delivery rate.

V-twin: As you can guess from the name, the cylinders are aligned at an angle to each other forming a V-shape. While these engines require balancer shafts to cancel vibrations, they are known to produce a good amount of torque even at relatively low number revolutions. Bike makers may choose the angle between the pistons to specify the configuration further, such as making it an L-twin.

Also Watch:

V-4: More compact than inline-four, V-4 configuration is basically two V-twins brought together. They bring the bottom end torque delivery of V-twins along with the smoothness of inline-four. They need two-cylinder systems and hence are more expensive to manufacture.

Want to be a Safer Rider? Here Are Five Points to Keep in Mind While Buying a Helmet

If the helmet is too big and there is a significant gap between your head and the helmet, then it wouldn’t be as effective in absorbing the impact.

Safety is of utmost importance when it comes to riding a bike or any two-wheeler. Unlike cars where you can rely on several safety features like airbags, seat belts, and a strong body frame, in bikes, you remain completely exposed to incoming threats.

While riding a bike, there are still some precautions that you can take to minimize injuries in case of an accident. Safety gears like riding jackets, elbow and knee pads and riding shoes are designed to take the impact if the rider falls or meets an accident. But, wearing full riding gear is not that practical for daily commuters so opting for a good helmet is the least you should do.

But even a helmet works only when it is of a proper fit for your head. If the helmet is too big and there is a significant gap between your head and the helmet, then it wouldn’t be as effective in absorbing the impact. Whereas, when the helmet is too tight, it can take a toll on your ears and head which may start hurting especially when worn for longer periods.

So, while choosing the right helmet consider certain points mentioned below:

RELATED NEWS

Shape:As we all have different shapes of heads, even the manufacturers make helmets accordingly and offer a range of helmets. Helmets often come in three common shapes that are round oval, intermediate oval and long oval. To determine the shape of your head, one can use a mirror and then choose the right helmet.

Size:Besides having different shapes, our heads vary in size also. While buying a new helmet, make sure to always look for the tag where manufacturers usually mention the size. The shell of the helmet often comes in sizes ranging from small to even extra-large. However, it is advised to always wear the helmet to ensure a proper fit.

Type:Choosing the type or style solely depends on the comfort and purpose of the rider. While off-road motorcyclists choose the off-road helmets with extended chin bar and better air flow, daily commuters prefer half or open-face helmets. Other types also include full-face helmet, dual sport helmet and modular motorcycle helmets.

Quality:Helmets are not something that you change very often considering that they are mostly durable and not that cheap. So, try investing in a good brand like Steelbird, Vega and Studds and avoid buying cheap helmets which would hardly protect you during a mishap.

Also Watch:

Certification:To ensure that your helmet has been tested before you put it on your head, look for certain marks on the helmet. In India, ISI (Indian Standards Institute) certified helmets are considered to be the safest. The certification is only given to the manufacturers who test their helmets in labs before selling them in the market.

Spoked wheels or alloy? What is better for your two-wheeler? Well, to an extent, this depends on personal preference as both the wheel options have their own advantages and disadvantages. For the longest time, spoke wheels remained the unchallenged king until alloy wheels made their debut in the 1970s. With advancements in motorbike technology and design, a large group of manufacturers shifted to alloys as it is cheaper and allows bikes to run without tubes. However, spoked wheels aren’t completely out of the picture yet. Here we take a look at key aspects of both the wheels options and compare their advantages and disadvantages for you.

Spoked Wheels

While many consider spoked wheels an old technology, they are still are preferred by manufacturers of off-road bikes due to their durability. Popular bikes like Royal Enfield Himalayan, Hero XPulse 200 use spoked wheels instead of alloys. This trend can also be seen on expensive off-road motorbikes likes Triumph scrambler 1200 XC. Having spoked wheels allows bikes to handle sharp bumps easily as the shock gets transferred through the wheels before being absorbed by the suspension. Spoked wheels are designed to bend, flex and handle shock while avoiding a breakdown. Additionally, this wheel option is easily repairable and can be corrected for minor faults without much expense.

While the advantage list is long, there are also certain drawbacks of using this vintage technology. Spoked wheels on most bikes use inner tubes that makes puncture fixing a complex process. In off-road conditions, punctures can be a regular hassle and this may add a burden for the rider. While there are tubeless options of spoked wheels, they are slightly on the higher side of pricing.

Also Watch:

Alloy Wheels

Alloys are a slightly newer technology and are quite popular on bikes around the globe. This larger demand has brought the manufacturing significantly down making it a more viable option in terms of pricing. While alloys were initially introduced on performance-oriented and superbikes, it off late has become a regular offering on budget-friendly motorbike options. Since they are single cast, and rigid, alloys offer better stability at higher speeds. The rigidity aspects help them facilitate higher output of horsepower and torque with ease as well. Having alloys facilitate the easy use of tubeless tyres that makes the puncture fixing process hassle-free.

However, since alloys are rigid and can’t bend, they tend to break or crack due to sudden jerks at high speeds. In most cases, repairs of alloys aren’t possible and buyers have to replace them with a new one.

The Budget for FY23 proposed to impose a differential excise duty of Rs 2 on unblended fuels from October 1, 2022. In her Budget speech, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said the blending of fuel is a priority of the government and the move to impose the duty is towards encouraging the programme. The Centre had, in 2021, advanced its set deadline to meet the target of 20 percent ethanol blending in petrol from 2030 to 2025.

In line with the announcement, many investments and expansion activities are expected in the biofuel space. Stocks of sugar companies too also turned buoyant with the preponement of the deadline. Sugar, besides other agricultural commodities, are used in producing biofuel.

In other automotive-related news, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has announced new initiatives to further bolster the adoption of electric vehicles in India. The union minister has stated that the government will be developing special mobility zones for electric vehicles. In the coming fiscal, the government will also formulate a new battery swapping technology in India.

Ahead of this, the SMEV had put forward a few points that needed to be covered in this year’s budget. The electric mobility sector is a large space that Indian industries can capture before international players invade the market with “cheaper contraptions", SMEV DG, Sohinder Gill, said. “Around the world, the craze for bigger SUVs and higher-powered motorcycles is slowly veining towards compact and smaller electric cars and scooters. Thus, wonders can be done in affordable small cars and scooters segment, just as they are in internal combustion engine vehicles," Gill said.
